We’re glad you’ve come!  Feel free to browse our website, read more about us, give us feedback, and ask us questions – we have many ways to be in contact – check them out and let’s keep in touch!

Our Vision:

Using adventure to uplift individuals, families, communities, and countries.

Our History:

Vertical Life was initially formed in 2004 as an outdoor adventure company specializing in running adventure camps for teens.  Toward the end of 2008, during the height of the xenophobic violence that was occurring in South Africa, Vertical Life became involved in providing aid and relief in the form of food and blanket drops to the various camps that had been set up around the Johannesburg area.  It was during this time that Vertical Life became more aware of the increasing need of people, not only in this country, but also on the African continent.  The staff of Vertical Life believes wholeheartedly that as members of the human race, we have a responsibility to look after others who, due to circumstances, are not in a position to properly look after themselves.  We have therefore expanded to incorporate humanitarian relief to our focus on outdoor education.

Our Projects:

So what are we up to?  Check out the links below and find out more.

- The Africa Project: our expedition up the east coast of Africa in 2010 and 2011.

- Vertical Living: adventure camps designed to develop leadership and team-building skills.

- INCERT: a network of churches trained in disaster preparedness.

6 August - Changing Plans

Right now we are sitting just north of the equator.  Today our plans changed as they sometimes do when travelling in Africa.  When we left S.A. we were told that we could apply for an Ethiopian visa in Nairobi, now it appears that due to the high influx of refugees visas can only be obtained in your home country.  After exploring every option to try continue North without success we have decided to head west into Uganda and Rwanda then South into Tanzania-Malawi-Mozambique-South Africa.  It is a hard decision to make and one that neither Duncan nor I was keen to make, we really had our hearts set on travelling a bit further North.  We even briefly considered travelling through Sudan or Somalia but were advised against both due to security risks travelling alone.  Although we are disappointed we feel that this new route will allow us to explore east Africa properly, spending more time finding more projects that we can assist better.  After 3 months on the road together we have become the sort of travellers that can be thrown into a dire situation and somehow manage to find the adventure, make a difference and leave a legacy, so as disappointed as we are we are also excited to see what else is in store for us.

11 July - Happy Birthday Duncan!

Today is Duncan’s birthday and to celebrate we are heading north to Mombasa along the coast!  We have had an amazing time in Dar es Salam and met some people doing great work.  Keep checking the website blog for more news coming soon!

12 May - From Tree Seeds to Water?

Hi!  Right now we are in the north of Botswana visiting some friends on our way further north.  So far, we have had an amazing time with no major incidents to report.  Today we will be meeting with a family who is setting up a venture here that is focused on community-based projects.  One of the projects is using a local tree's seed to purify water!  We are looking forward to finding out more about that.  Thank you for your valued support in this expediton - we will keep you updated as we go.  Please also remember to follow our blog.  Looking forward to sharing more with you along the way!
